What can I do to decrease and minimize the chemical burden within my body?

Detoxifying is vitally important especially in today’s world, however, detoxifying simply isn’t enough. Avoiding and minimizing any chemicals exposure will assist in helping to avoid the illnesses that have become almost commonplace.

There is a greater awareness of the need to return to as natural as possible in all things including food, personal, skin and cleaning household products.

Recipe :

Salata Horiatiki

This recipe is from on of my favourite Chefs – Rick Stein in his “Mediterranean Escapes” recipe Book

A simple Greek salad gets a new edge with a little bit of cheeky alcohol !

Ingredients (please use organic whenever possible)

  • 450g ripe, well flavoured tomatoes
  • Half a cucumber
  • 1 salad onion
  • 200g greek fetta cheese
  • 4.5 tablespoons of olive oil
  • plus a little extra to serve
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Pernod or Ouzo
  • 2 tbsps chopped dill
  • 20 small black olives
  • Large pinch of dried oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Crusty fresh bread to serve (pref organic)


  1. Cut the tomatoes into chunks and cut the cucumber in half lengthways and then across into thick slices
  2. Very thinly slice the onion
  3. Crumble the fetta into small chunksPut the olive oil, half tsp of salt, the red wine vinegar, ouzo and some black pepper into a large salad bowl and whisk together.
  4. Add the tomatoes, cucumber and onions and toss together gently.
  5. Add the feta cheese, chopped dill and olives and mix briefly then divide between 4 plates.
  6. Drizzle the salad with a little more olive oil, sprinkle with dried oregano and a little coarsely ground black pepper
  7. Serve with some crusty organic sourdough
    (Tip : Reheat sourdough in a preheated oven at 220degrees c for 7 minutes or so before serving to make it crunchy on the outside instead of chewy)

Close your eyes, smile (think of someone you love smiling at you to make your smile real)

Breathe deeply inwards through the nose then deeply outwards through the mouth 5 times

10 FREE Activities to Enjoy on Your Girls Getaway

Going away on a Girls Weekend is a Treat, there is no denying that.

So we’ve come up with some activities you can enjoy on your escape that won’t cost you a cent.  Feel free to share them with friends looking to go away – to help them get the best out of their break.

  1. Go for a walk – Now this can be amazing depending on where you have booked your getaway.  If you travel to the South Coast for example the beaches can be so quiet that you get to totally immerse yourself in the peace and tranquility and freedom of being so close to the ocean whilst feeling the sand between your toes.  The most important thing is to be “present”. Don’t spend the walk looking at your phone observe your surrounding in detail, literally breathe it in and soak up the sunshine.
  2. Watch a movie – I’m not talking one at the cinema but one in the comfort of a big squishy lounge, maybe with a snuggle rug and even better some homemade popcorn. Look up a classic on Netflix like Love Actually or Notting Hill ( I may be giving away my love of English movies here) and relive the joy of a great movie that makes you feel good and maybe even makes you cry.
  3. Go for a wine tasting – Now for some some this may not end up being a free activity but for others it can be.  Again the secret is to take in the moment, take time to actually savour the flavours,  but also absorb the beautiful surroundings. Cupitts Winery near Mollymook and Dryridge Estate in the Blue Mountains both have the most incredible views – make sure you don’t miss out on seeing them on your Girls Getaway.
  4. Take photographs – Whilst our phones can make us feel continually connected and unable to get away,  they do have the magnificent advantage of them being the camera we take with us everywhere – and they can take a damn good photo too ! Add a free app like Instasize to enhance them and you really can appear very talented.  Again the location of your Girls Weekend can make a big difference to the beauty of your photographs.  The Blue Mountains offers some amazing material and the South Coast is incredibly picturesque and both can often be completely devoid of people to “photo bomb” your shot. They can also provide a magnificent backdrop to a selfie or group shot
  5. Swap recipes – we all have our favourites and quickest recipes – they make our life easier and more enjoyable – why not share them with your girlfriends to improve their life too.  You could print them in advance of your weekend or maybe create a Google Docs document to share them all on.
  6. Play a board game. Often venues will provide a few games to keep you amused but it doesn’t take much to throw some in the car too for your weekend away, we all have them in a cupboard somewhere.  When was the last time you shared a fun game with friends ? Remember this another activity where you have to be “present” so it enhances your escape.
  7. Play cards.  A good card game can be so much fun, especially when you are away with a group.  If you don’t know how to play a game or are looking for inspiration simply refer to this site HERE
  8. Write a poem/journal/memory/blog/start a book.  Getting away from the everyday can be creatively inspiring.  Start something you’ve always wanted to write and enjoy the moment of having some time to do that !
  9. Meditate – again our time when we are not away always feels rushed, full and busy. You are on a weekend away with the girls , take time to breathe, maybe use an app like “Headspace” to keep you focused, doing this at a peaceful lookout in the Blue Mountains or on the Beach at Narrawallee is sheer bliss.
  10. Finally have a deep and meaningful conversation.  Talk about things you never have before, ask each other questions you don’t know about each other, explore and help each other with problems, offer support and encouragement and a “safe” environment for your friends to share.  Our friends can provide the greatest of therapy and love and it can be so much more valuable than we realise.  A tool such as a “Fuelbox” can be very useful for this to inspire you with questions you have never thought to ask before…to discover more than you ever felt possible and deepen your friendships.

So there you have it – who would have thought you could do so much for nothing.

Scent Matters

Ever walked into a room and a scent has taken you straight back to a childhood memory?

The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses. Those with full olfactory function may be able to think of smells that evoke particular memories; the scent of an orchard in blossom conjuring up recollections of a childhood picnic, for example. This can often happen spontaneously, with a smell acting as a trigger in recalling a long-forgotten event or experience. All this because the olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling it’s sometimes called the “emotional brain”. When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment. Your brain forges a link between the smell and a memory — associating the smell of chlorine with summers at the pool or lilies with a garden. When you encounter the smell again, the link is already there, ready to elicit a memory or a mood. Every person may not have same experience with particular scent. This is part of the reason why not everyone likes the same smells.

Living in the Now with your Girlfriends

So much has been written about being “present” and yet in this digital age we live in it becomes harder and harder to achieve.  Sometimes life throws us a curveball that makes us consider this concept more carefully and sometimes we are just getting older and suddenly start to realize what really matters.

Thankfully I am one of the latter.  Sure getting older has it’s challenges (aching knees anyone?)  but it also brings delight and sadly too regret, but that forces us to think and act a little differently.  When my kids were little I thought it would go on forever – the lack of sleep the endless making of food and the constant buying of supplies in-between my working week.  Yet now as they are young adults suddenly it’s all a blur.  Thank goodness for video and photos that show me I was actually there, I did do some good stuff for my kids and even better they tell me this too (although they also tell me when I yelled there was nothing they found more frightening – yes I was real, I reached breaking points,  I yelled !)

What’s the point of all this? Well the point is we need to start making life less of a “blur” we need to take in each moment, enjoy each day and learn from each bad time.  When we catch up with a friend for a coffee we need to switch our phone to airplane mode so we cannot be distracted by even a vibration, we need to arrange special time away with friends to get into a true and deep conversation (again turn off the phone please) and we need to suck up every moment – check out the colours of the trees in detail, take a spot on a rock at a lookout and breathe deeply. When someone spoils our day we need to think what we learned from that – what was that person or event meant to teach us ? When we yell at our kids we need to hug them later with equal vigour.

We did a few “being present” exercises at our Mini Girls Getaway in December you might like to try them at home or indeed on your next Girls Getaway

  1. Turn your phone to airplane mode for a period of time – you decide how long
  2. Practice “Mindful Meditation” – I find my mind is just too busy to just stop so I like this practice – you simply do something very simple like take a sip of water from a glass but observe every aspect of that action in detail : How does the glass feel against your lips ? What is the temperature of the water ? What is the thickness of the glass, how does the water feel as it goes down your throat and so on. Focus entirely – just a couple of minutes each day can make the world of difference to your mindset.
  3. Make time for making memories. Stop saying “let’s catch up” make a time in your diary, stick to it, and honour it with the commitment friendship deserves.
  4. Start a “Grateful” Diary. Write just one thing last thing at night/first thing in the morning you are grateful for on that day.

10 Top Tricks to Lift the Mental Load

Women are versatile and capable, but these days we are often overstretched and stressed.  There is so much to juggle – from the list of projects to be done at work, to the shopping we need for the fridge, from the registration we need to do online for the kids local team to the bills we need to pay, from the reminder we have to give to the kids about wearing sunscreen to the alarm we have to set to catch the early plane to a meeting, for which we’ve had to arrange all manner of friends and family to take over the school runs that day ! The point is our brains are full of so many things we have to remember and it’s wearing us out ! So, how can we reduce the mental load ? Here’s 10 really useful tricks to relieve your brain of some of that mental load and improve your efficiency at the same time !

  1. Set reminders in your phone for appointments – never miss a dental appt again !
  2. Install the Wunderlist App – Create several “To Do Lists” for different areas of your life   e.g.. work, home, kids.  Every time you think of something add it to the relevant list rather than having to “hold” it in your brain.  This can also help when going to sleep to turn off that busy brain.
  3. Use a service for home cooked meals like “Chefs Palate” .  This has been a real game changer for me – no only do I NOT have to do the “what shall I make for dinner tonight” thinking routine, but it saves me hours of shopping time ! It’s really fresh food, delicious and pretty healthy and they do some of the preparation, each meal takes only 20 minutes to cook – heaven! I don’t use it every night just work nights, they deliver once a week to my work. It’s awesome !
  4. Create a “Groceries” list in the Wunderlist app – every time you run out of something add it to the list – next time you hit the shops it’s all there ready to go, you can share the app with your family members so that they can do the same.
  5. Create a “Things I would like to do one day” Wunderlist.  Add to it restaurants you would like to go to, places you would like to visit,  so again you can take those out of your brain,  but also have something quick to refer to next time you want to book a holiday/dinner out and can’t think of where to go !
  6. Delegate ! Are there some tasks you do but in fact someone else could ? Could your son remember to put the bins out each week (don’t laugh you never know….)? Could your mum take the kids to their piano lessons ? Is there a friend or another parent you could share the basketball run with ? Write down some tasks you might be able to allocate out and ASK – sometimes grandparents especially would actually love to help they just like you to ask :), the worst anyone can do is say no.
  7. Create an In Tray and pick a day to pay the bills.  Place all the post/emails in an In tray when they come in and one day a week pay them all at the same time, keeping a disciplined structure like this avoids missing/forgetting bills but gets it out of your head too. Set up an auto debit if you can handle the lack of control 🙂
  8. If you have to post on Social Media for business : spend half a day thinking of all the posts you need to do for the next few weeks.  Then use a scheduling system like “Hopper” for Instagram to plan out all of your posts for the next few weeks.  This takes the “what am I going to post” today load off you and means you can actually take some time OFF social media posting.
  9. Book some time out for yourself to “reset”.  Spend a couple of nights in a completely different place to home, preferably with friends and preferably with a “no phones” rule for certain periods of time.  Your brain needs a rest and you need to be present and enjoy some fun every now and then before you reload that mental load again ! So what do your REALLY want for Mothers Day ???

So is it a book ? A pair of socks ? Or a box of chocolates ?

Or is it actually none of the above and you actually just want some TIME……

You see being a Mum is busy.  These days it’s ridiculously busy ! Most have to work as well as be a Mum, and if not,  their list of co-curriculur activities to get their kids to or amount of negotiating with toddlers, or adhering to perfect advice in breastfeeding books to meet modern expectations of parenting are endless.

Don’t get me wrong being a Mum is absolutely THE best “job” in the world and those of us lucky enough to be one are blessed, but it’s also a career that can cause elation followed by exhaustion, doubt followed by jubilation, guilt followed by pride, smiles followed by tears.  The amount of emotions alone are tiring !

So sometimes I think us Mum’s need a break.  Now I’m not talking two weeks in the Maldives (yes I heard you all sigh then) – you actually know how much denial of the kids treats and how many checklists and pre-work and post work effort that would take !  No, I’m talking just a simple little break – perhaps an afternoon tea in the city to feel like a Princess (see my very own beautiful Mum doing just that below) or a night or even two (oh the joy of two full nights sleep !) away with your besties.  But the trouble is we rarely give ourselves that luxury.  Well Mothers Day actually gives you permission to do so – you can even use your own Mum as an excuse ! You see your Mum (if you are lucky enough to still have her) wants some time too….your time.  My kids are already teenagers (where did that go) and I am already dreading the day when they move out (yes I know I’ve been lucky so far – I haven’t felt like throwing them out yet !) so I can’t imagine what it must be like not to see your son or daughter for weeks, months even years because they are so busy with work/overseas/dealing with their own kids.

So here’s a challenge for you.  This year for Mother’s Day ask the one you need the support from to take care of the kids to give you some time as a gift.  Ask them to give you a moment with your friends or that afternoon tea with your mum or better yet get a bunch of your girlfriends together and get them all to do the same – to achieve that ubiquitous “leave pass” we all seem to need to achieve for a weekend away together.

The Magic of the Blue Mountains

There is something intangible about the mountains that is good for the soul. There is an energy, an inner feeling they create which literally feels like a breath of fresh air. Given they are virtually on the doorstep of the bussling hub of Sydney it’s staggering just how different they are to that environment. From the glorious and expansive views, to the stunning starry skyscape at night, to the variety of artistic creations available this really is an escape from the rat race, from the traffic and best of all from the stress.

The beauty of it though, is a combination of all the above together with the elements of sophistication we have come to enjoy in Sydney. Elements such as good coffee, excellent restaurants, beautifully merchandised stores and delis abundant with local produce, that have become almost a requirement for most to enjoy the area are now entirely catered for, in fact in someways more so than in the city.


Joys for me include the retail therapy in Leura Village, the delis delights at “This Little Piggy Wiggy” in Blackheath and the quirkiness of the decor at The Avalon Restaurant in Katoomba. When you stay at Lavender Majestic in Katoomba you can walk to Avalon Restaurant which means enjoying a number of their delightful cocktails becomes an attainable pleasure.
